Dev Update: Prototyping New Systems & Character Progress

Hey everyone! We're back with another development update for Tales Edge, and this month has been packed with exciting progress. We've been laying the groundwork for key gameplay systems and refining our main character. Let's dive into the details!

Core Gameplay Prototyping

This month, we began prototyping several new features, including Skill Points, Upgrades, Abilities and Quests! While these systems are still in their early stages, they are already functional and playable, allowing us to start testing our core gameplay loops and identifying what’s working and what’s not.

Currently, the game features a small selection of quests that players can accept. Upon completion, they earn Skill Points, which can be used to upgrade key stats such as Health or Ranged Damage. Additionally, players can now swap Passive or Activatable Abilities thanks to the newly implemented Gameplay Ability System (GAS). GAS enables us to experiment quickly with new abilities and mechanics—whether it's turning the player invisible to sneak past enemies or adding a high-mobility double jump, we can rapidly test and refine gameplay ideas.

Unlocking and Customizing Abilities

Abilities play a crucial role in shaping a player's playstyle, but they are not accessible from the start. To activate a Passive or Activatable Ability, players must first accumulate a certain amount of gold. If they do not have enough, the ability remains locked and unusable.

Once players gather enough gold, they gain access to a variety of abilities that they can unlock and customize based on their preferred playstyle. Some abilities enhance mobility, like an extended dash or a double jump, while others provide offensive or defensive advantages.

Players can mix and match different abilities to create unique combat strategies, making every encounter dynamic and personal. The ability system encourages experimentation, allowing players to refine their approach as they progress through the game.

Character Progress

The team has been hard at work refining character designs, particularly focusing on Red, our main character. Red is undergoing a new design process, and while we can't share visuals just yet, we're excited about the direction her updated look is taking. The goal is to refine her silhouette and overall aesthetics to align perfectly with the game’s artistic vision. More details on Red’s new look will be revealed soon!

What’s Next?

Exciting milestones are on the horizon! We aim to start uploading playtests to Steam and testing the game directly from there. Additionally, a brand-new teaser trailer is in the works, giving you a fresh look at the world we’re building!
