Forging Ahead: Expanding the World and Refining Gameplay

Hey everyone! It’s been a while since our last update here on the website, but we’re back with plenty of exciting progress to share. The team has been hard at work refining core gameplay mechanics, pushing forward with AI improvements, and building out the world of Tales Edge. We appreciate your patience and support—it means the world to us!

Now, let’s dive into this month’s devblog!

Refining Movement & Traversal

Expanding how players move through the world has been a major priority. We want traversal to feel intuitive, responsive, and, most importantly, fun. That means tweaking movement systems, adjusting controls, and fixing those small but crucial bugs that can make or break the experience.

Strike teams have been working on improving animations and responsiveness. It’s all about making sure movement feels natural while giving players a sense of control and momentum. While we’re not ready to showcase it yet, a new system is in development to offer fresh ways to navigate the environment. More on that soon!

AI Behavior Enhancements

AI plays a key role in making encounters feel immersive and challenging. Recently, we’ve been refining enemy awareness states to create more dynamic interactions. Enemies now have a more natural transition between different levels of alertness, making their reactions feel more organic.

The awareness system is now divided into distinct states:

  • Unaware: The enemy is completely oblivious to the player's presence.

  • Suspicious: Something has drawn their attention, prompting them to investigate their surroundings.

  • Alert: The enemy has detected a disturbance and actively searches for the source.

  • Engaged: The enemy has identified the player and commits to combat.

These improvements make AI behavior more immersive and give players the opportunity to interact more strategically—whether that means sneaking past enemies, luring them into traps, or engaging them in direct combat.

Concept Art & Worldbuilding

On the environment concept art front, our primary focus has been on developing the outpost, a key location that plays a crucial role in the game's world-building and gameplay flow. Establishing its architectural design, layout, and integration with the surrounding environment has been a major challenge, requiring extensive iteration. The outpost will serve as a central hub, offering players a point of rest, interaction, and strategic planning. Ensuring it feels lived-in and cohesive within the world of Tales Edge has been a top priority, with ongoing work on structural details, pathways, and interactive elements.

With a strong foundation now in place, we’re shifting our focus to mood shots and lighting studies for other key areas. This will help us define the atmosphere and visual identity of different locations, making sure every region in Tales Edge has its own unique feel.

Building a game from scratch isn’t a simple journey—it’s more like navigating a labyrinth blindfolded. There are highs and lows, but every milestone is a victory. In our latest video, we take you behind the scenes to show what it looks and feels like to reach our first benchmark. Check it out now and let us know what you think!
